About the Sutra佛說海龍王經

在浩瀚的佛典中，有一部鮮少人注意卻極為殊勝的經典——《佛說海龍王經》。記載了釋迦牟尼佛在靈鷲山為海龍王及眷屬宣說大乘深義，並應邀至龍宮弘法的莊嚴場景。

Among the vast collection of Buddhist scriptures there is a text seldom noticed yet exceedingly sublime — the Sutra Spoken by the Buddha on the Sea Dragon King [Sāgara-nāgarāja-paripṛcchā Sūtra]. It records the solemn scene in which Sakyamuni Buddha, upon Vulture Peak, expounded the profound meaning of the Mahayana for the Sea Dragon King and his retinue, and accepted their invitation to propagate the dharma in the Dragon Palace.

Across its twenty chapters the Buddha teaches the practice of the bodhisattva, the Six Perfections, the gates of dharani, and bestows predictions of buddhahood upon dragons, asuras, and a dragon girl alike — closing with the entrustment of the sutra to future generations. The whole assembly of devas, dragons, spirits and people rejoiced, made obeisance, and undertook to practice it.

龍王不僅是護法神祇，更是能成佛的眾生。他們以前都曾是修行人，因前世犯了戒律才轉世為龍。

Dragon kings are not only Dharma Protector deities, but sentient beings capable of attaining buddhahood. All of them were cultivators in former times, and it was only because they transgressed the precepts in past lives that they were reborn as dragons.

龍族的境遇並不一致，有些龍活得很好，有些卻受苦，甚至被人類欺負。龍並非單純的動物，而是一個種族，就像人間的不同民族一樣。他們同樣在六道輪迴之中，既可能墮入地獄，也可能升上天界。

The circumstances of the dragon clan are by no means uniform: some dragons live well, while others suffer, and some are even bullied by humans. Dragons are not simply animals, but a race unto themselves, just as the human world has its different peoples. They too are within the Six Realms of Reincarnation, and may either fall into the hells or ascend to the heavens.

龍族壽命長、身形大小不一，但也有三種痛苦：

Dragons are long-lived and vary in bodily size, yet they also endure three kinds of suffering:

《龍王經》能帶來最大福報，因為天龍八部最接近人間，祈求必有感應。

The Dragon King Sutra brings the greatest merit, because the Eight Classes of Heavenly and Dragon Beings are the closest to the human realm, and prayers made to them will certainly elicit a spiritual response.

誦此經，四部（天部、龍部、阿修羅部、大鵬金翅鳥部）皆會護持，賜予福報。曾有弟子印行此經，很快有感應，得到生活上的利益。

Upon reciting this sutra, all four classes — the Deva class, the Dragon class, the Asura class, and the Garuda class — will offer protection and bestow merit. There was once a disciple who printed and circulated this sutra and swiftly received a spiritual response, obtaining benefits in daily life.

師佛讚歎：「《龍王經》是真的很好！因為它調和天龍八部！」

The Guru Buddha praised it, saying: The Dragon King Sutra is truly excellent! Because it harmonizes the Eight Classes of Heavenly and Dragon Beings!

《龍王經》由竺法護大師所譯，屬於早期譯經作品。當時佛教漢語尚在建立階段，許多名相和用詞還未成熟，因此文字顯得古樸，與現代佛法用語有差異。

The Dragon King Sutra was translated by Master Zhu Fahu [Dharmarakṣa] and belongs to the early period of sutra translation. At that time Buddhist Chinese was still in its formative stage; many technical terms and expressions had not yet matured, so the language appears archaic and differs from modern Buddhist usage.

理解這部經典需要注意它的時代背景，不能以後期成熟的譯經標準來衡量。

Understanding this sutra requires attention to its historical context; it cannot be measured by the standards of the mature translations of later periods.

突顯佛法在漢地弘揚的過程「早期摸索到後期完善」，逐步形成完整的佛教漢語系統。

It highlights the course of the dharma's propagation in the Chinese lands — from early exploration to later perfection — gradually forming a complete system of Buddhist Chinese.
